Choosing between Pattaya and Phuket is really a choice between two kinds of holiday. Pattaya is a coastal city on the mainland, easy to reach from Bangkok and busy in the way cities are busy. Phuket is an island with its own airport, a ring of beaches and a resort economy built around them.
Neither is better in general. One suits a short, convenient break with a city attached. The other suits a beach-led trip where the resort and the coastline are the main event. The right answer depends on how long you have and what you want to do when you are not on the sand.
The short version
- Pattaya is on the mainland and is easier to combine with Bangkok.
- Phuket is an island with its own airport and a wider choice of beach resorts.
- Pattaya's main beach is a city beach; Phuket's beaches are more spread out.
- Pattaya suits shorter trips and travellers who want restaurants and nightlife nearby.
- Phuket suits beach-focused holidays and travellers willing to move between beaches.

Access and how the trip fits together
Pattaya's advantage is that it is on the mainland. You can arrive at Suvarnabhumi, drive to Pattaya and be at your hotel the same day. U-Tapao, south of the city, is closer still, though it has fewer flights. That makes Pattaya easy to add to a Bangkok trip without a domestic flight.
Phuket has its own airport, so you can fly directly from Bangkok or, on some routes, from overseas. Once you are on the island, the beaches are spread along the west coast, and the distance between them can be significant. Where you stay in Phuket matters as much as which beach you choose.
Beaches: city beach vs island coast
Pattaya Beach runs along the city centre, with the promenade and Beach Road beside it. It is convenient and lively, but it is a city beach: boats, traffic and people are part of the picture. Jomtien, to the south, is longer and calmer, and the northern bay around Wong Amat is quieter again.
Phuket's west coast has a series of beaches, from busy Patong to quieter stretches further north and south. The sand and water can be beautiful, but the beach you choose determines the kind of holiday you get. Some are dominated by resorts, others by restaurants and bars, and others are relatively quiet.
If you want to walk out of the hotel into a choice of restaurants and nightlife, Pattaya is easier. If you want a resort on a specific beach and are happy to stay there, Phuket has more of that.
Atmosphere and things to do
Pattaya is a working city as well as a resort. It has shopping centres, markets, seafood restaurants, nightlife and a large expat population. You can spend a rainy afternoon in a mall or an evening at a bar without planning. That convenience is the reason many people return.
Phuket feels more like a holiday island. The resorts are larger, the beaches are the main attraction, and the evenings are concentrated in beach towns such as Patong. There is culture and food, but the rhythm is set by the coast rather than the city.
Cost: what to compare
It is tempting to say one is cheaper than the other, but the comparison depends on the room, the beach and the season. A beachfront resort in Phuket and a city hotel in Pattaya are not the same product. Compare the total for the trip you actually want, including flights and transfers.
Pattaya has more budget and mid-range city rooms, which can make a short break cheaper. Phuket has a wide range of resorts, including very high-end ones, and transport on the island can add to the bill. Neither is uniformly cheap or expensive.
Which should you choose?
- Choose Pattaya for a short break, a Bangkok combination, or a trip where you want city conveniences beside the beach.
- Choose Phuket for a beach-led holiday, a resort stay or a longer trip where the coastline is the main reason for travelling.
- Choose Pattaya if you want to walk to dinner and have plenty of options without planning.
- Choose Phuket if you are happy to stay at a resort and use transport for trips to other beaches.
- Consider both on a longer trip: a few nights in Bangkok, a few in Pattaya, then a flight to Phuket.
