Things to Know Before Booking a Hotel in Pattaya

Most hotel problems in Pattaya are not surprises. They are details that were visible before booking but easy to miss: the view, the road, the deposit or the cancellation terms.

Booking a hotel is mostly a matter of reading carefully. The photographs show the best angle, the map shows the area rather than the entrance, and the rate may or may not include the things you assume. None of that is unique to Pattaya, but the city's size and variety make the details matter.

These are the things worth checking before you pay, in the order they tend to cause problems.

The short version

  • Confirm the room type and view, not just the hotel name.
  • Check what the rate includes: breakfast, taxes, service charges and deposits.
  • Read the cancellation policy before paying, especially for non-refundable rates.
  • Look at the exact location and the walk to the beach or the main road.
  • Ask about construction, noise and accessibility if any of them matter to you.

1. Beachfront is not a single thing

A hotel can be on the sand, across a road from the beach or set back with sea-view rooms. All three may describe themselves as beachfront. If the beach is the reason for the trip, ask whether there is a road to cross and whether the room rate includes a sea view.

Our guide to beachfront hotels in Pattaya explains the difference in more detail, including which beaches suit which kind of stay.

2. The room type is the product

Standard, deluxe, sea view, pool view and family room are different products, often in the same building. A cheap rate may be for a room without a window, a room in an older wing or a room that faces the car park. Check the description and the photos for the exact room type, not the hotel in general.

If you are travelling as a couple, check the bed type. Twin and double rooms are sometimes allocated on request rather than guaranteed. If you need two beds, say so at booking and confirm it in the reply.

3. Occupancy and extra beds

A room that sleeps two may not comfortably sleep three, even if an extra bed is available. Family rooms and connecting rooms are a different category, and the extra-bed charge may not include breakfast. If you are travelling with children, confirm the sleeping arrangement and the total for the group.

4. Taxes, service charges and deposits

Some rates are quoted before tax and service charges, and some hotels hold a deposit at check-in for incidentals. The deposit is usually returned after check-out, but the amount and the method matter if you are travelling on a tight budget. Ask for the total payable and what is held at the property.

What to confirm before paying

ItemWhat to ask
Room rateIs it per room per night, and does it include taxes and service?
BreakfastIs it included for every guest, and what time is it served?
CancellationWhat is the deadline, and what is charged after it?
DepositHow much is held at check-in, and when is it returned?
Extra bedIs it available, what does it cost, and does it include breakfast?
Check-in timeCan you store luggage if you arrive early?

5. Cancellation terms

A non-refundable rate is cheaper for a reason. If your plans might change, the difference between a flexible rate and a non-refundable one can be worth paying. Read the deadline and the time zone it refers to, and keep the confirmation email.

6. Location, not just the area

Area names in Pattaya cover a lot of ground. A hotel described as Jomtien may be at the far southern end of the beach, and a Naklua hotel may be closer to Wong Amat. Open the map, find the entrance and check the walk to the beach, the nearest restaurants and the main road.

If you are staying in Central Pattaya, check whether the room faces Beach Road or a side street with bars. If you are staying on Pratamnak, check the slope and whether you will need a taxi for every trip.

7. Noise and construction

Pattaya is a city that builds. A hotel can be quiet on the website and next to a construction site in reality. Recent reviews sometimes mention it, but not always. Ask the hotel directly whether there is building work nearby and whether the room you are booking is affected.

8. Check-in and identification

Hotels in Thailand usually register guests at check-in and ask for a passport or identity document. Bring the passport you used for the booking, or check what alternative the hotel accepts. If you arrive before check-in, ask whether luggage storage is available.

9. Practical details

  • Electricity is 220 volts. Plug types vary, so bring a universal adapter if your devices need one.
  • Tap water is not drinking water. Hotels usually provide bottled water; check whether it is replenished daily.
  • Air conditioning is standard, but a room with a balcony may be worth confirming if you want one.
  • Wi-Fi is common, but speed varies. If you need to work, ask before booking.
  • Accessibility varies. Lifts, ramps and accessible bathrooms are not universal in older buildings.
