Central Pattaya is compact enough to walk, but the city stretches along the coast, and Jomtien, Wong Amat and Pratamnak are not within comfortable walking distance of the centre. You will use transport, especially in the heat.
The options are straightforward once you know what each one is for. The main things to sort out are the airport transfer and the difference between a shared songthaew and a private taxi.
The short version
- Suvarnabhumi is the main international airport; U-Tapao is closer to Pattaya.
- Songthaews run along Beach Road and Jomtien Beach Road and are the cheapest shared option.
- Ride-hailing apps work well for specific destinations and late-night trips.
- Agree the fare before getting into a taxi that does not use a meter.
- Only rent a scooter if you are licensed, insured and comfortable riding in Thai traffic.
From the airport to Pattaya
Most international visitors arrive at Suvarnabhumi, east of Bangkok. Pattaya is roughly a two-hour drive in normal traffic, but the motorway can be slow at peak times and around holidays. U-Tapao, south of Pattaya, is much closer, though it has fewer flights.
You can book a private transfer, use a ride-hailing app, or take a shared minibus or coach from the airport. A private transfer is the simplest if you are arriving late or travelling with children. A shared service costs less but may involve waiting and several stops.
Songthaews: the shared pickup trucks
Songthaews, often called baht buses, are pickup trucks with two rows of seats in the back. They run fixed routes along Beach Road and Jomtien Beach Road, and you flag one down as it passes. Press the buzzer when you want to get off and pay the driver.
They are the cheapest way to cover the beach roads, but they are not taxis. The route is fixed, the vehicle may stop often, and the fare depends on the distance and the time. Agree the price before you get in if you are going somewhere off the usual route, and have small notes ready.

Ride-hailing and taxis
Ride-hailing apps work in Pattaya and are the easiest way to reach a specific hotel, restaurant or the airport. Pin your location carefully, especially in a large hotel or a market, and check the driver's plate before getting in.
Street taxis vary. Some use a meter, many do not. If there is no meter, agree the fare before you get in. A quoted price is not necessarily a fair price, but it is better than an argument at the destination. For late-night trips, a ride-hailing car is usually simpler than finding a taxi on the street.
Choosing the right transport
| Mode | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Songthaew | Beach Road and Jomtien Beach Road | Fixed routes; agree off-route fares first |
| Ride-hailing app | Specific destinations, late nights, airport runs | Pin the location; check the plate |
| Street taxi | Trips where an app is slow to arrive | Agree the fare if there is no meter |
| Motorbike taxi | Short trips in traffic | Helmet, speed and insurance; not for everyone |
| Rented scooter | Flexible days around Pratamnak or the outskirts | Licence, helmet, deposit and insurance |
| Boat to Koh Larn | A day on the island | Weather, last return time and pier |
Fares and routes change. Confirm the price and the destination before you set off.
Walking and the heat
Central Pattaya is walkable, but the heat and humidity make a twenty-minute walk feel longer than it would at home. Pavements are uneven in places, and crossing busy roads requires care. Carry water and plan to walk in the morning or late afternoon rather than the middle of the day.
Scooters and motorbike taxis
Scooter rental is common in Pattaya, and it gives you flexibility, especially around Pratamnak and the outer areas. It also carries risk. Thai traffic is unpredictable, and a minor accident can become expensive if you are not insured or not licensed for the vehicle.
If you rent, wear a helmet, check the brakes and lights, photograph the scooter before you take it, and make sure your travel insurance covers riding. You may need an international driving permit. Never leave your passport as a deposit if you can avoid it; offer a cash deposit instead.
Motorbike taxis are faster than cars in traffic and easy to find. They are not for everyone, particularly in the rain or at night. Agree the fare first and wear the helmet they provide.
Boats and day trips
Boats to Koh Larn leave from Bali Hai Pier at the southern end of Pattaya Beach. The crossing is short, but the schedule and the last return boat change with the season and the weather. Check the return time before you go, and do not rely on the last boat if the sea is rough.
If you are staying in Jomtien or Naklua, the pier is a taxi or songthaew ride away. Allow more time than you think, especially in the morning when the pier area is busy.
A simple plan for a first trip
- 1Book an airport transfer before you arrive, especially for a late flight.
- 2Use a songthaew for the beach roads and a ride-hailing app for specific destinations.
- 3Agree the fare before getting into a taxi without a meter.
- 4Keep small notes for songthaews and street food.
- 5Check the last boat time before a day trip to Koh Larn.
- 6Only rent a scooter if you are licensed, insured and confident.
